It is not unexpected for any female artist to have a life-long fascination with the histories of women in particular, and over the past eighteen months Mick Lindberg has been absorbed with the stories of women of importance from European history and with creating their imagined portraits, in a new and personal response. These characters range from Italian aristocrats to French poets; from courtiers to courtesans, but each has been selected for capturing the artist’s especial attention. These women played their part among the most powerful families in the Western world between the 16th and 19th Centuries, living and dying in and due to challenging situations within their eras and gender, and finding and displaying a creative outlet for their feminine power, for which they remain celebrated. Full of symbolism and presence, each piece has been created using antique and vintage fabrics, montaged photographic fabric print and the entire piece skilfully and impressively hand-stitched.
The unique compositions in cloth and thread by this Swedish-born artist depict female forms with the attuned attention of a portrait artist. This latest series forms the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with David Simon Contemporary and is notably different in direction as the artist moves from folkloric allegory to historical narrative. This captivating exhibition carries an energy in the directness of the individual compositions and in the power of the select group of subjects connected by time and theme as a collection.
